Fantasy Baseball Fun Activity for Dads

I want to thank everyone who participated in the poll to Pick My Fantasy Baseball Keepers - Batters Only. The winning picks were Carolos Lee, OF Houston Astros, and Russell Martin, C, LA Dodgers. These two excellent players, along with my obvious choice of Hanley Ramirez, SS, Florida Marlins will certainly get me off to a good start.

I was a little surprised when the commissioner asked for our Keepers at our annual meeting to review the rules this evening. I thought we were going to build suspense and save it for the week before the draft. It makes sense to get it out of the way now, though, so that teams can begin to prepare a draft strategy. I have to admit that I got some ribbing for keeping a catcher, but I stuck with what was voted on in the poll.

We changed a ton of things around this year, including going from individual pitching to team pitching. You draft two pitching staffs, and they both play every day with daily transactions. You get points for everything the starting pitcher, relievers and closers do for the game. So, what happens if there is a rain out? Tough cookies for you!

This league is all about scoring. We eliminated most of the negative scoring categories and added several additional points options for both hitters and pitchers. It's fun to mix things up a bit each year, otherwise it wouldn't be as exciting.

I usually play in two fantasy baseball leagues and three fantasy football leagues each year, but I'm cutting back to only one in baseball this year. Baby Caitlin is coming this summer, and I'd rather spend time working on this site than checking baseball stats for a second team.

The best part about fantasy sports is the draft. My buddies who organize the league also own the site SportsDaddy.com, which produces draft kits. They're great guys (and dads), and I definitely recommend checking out their site when you get a chance. They go above and beyond in customer service, and one of the guys Brian even created my "Coasties" team logo.

Fantasy sports is a great activity for dads to do together, albeit without the kids. I love sitting around a big table on draft night with a Guinness and a cigar, laughing at others' picks and deflecting the jeers and cheers when I pick a winner or a loser. We all keep in touch throughout the season. It's a friendly competition.

The other thing that's cool about fantasy sports is that it makes a long baseball season more interesting. Without it, I would be bored of the games by June and not start watching again until September. I appreciate that fantasy baseball keeps me connected to friends, and fellow dads, throughout the spring and summer.

All dads should find an activity that accomplishes the same thing. Now, I have the #3 draft spot to start thinking about...any suggestions?
