Pick My Fantasy Baseball Keepers - Batters Only
Alright Dads, I need your help. It's almost time for Fantasy Baseball, and I've got some tough decisions to make this year. I play in two leagues, one of which is a Keeper format.
It's a 10 team league, and each team gets to keep 3 batters. We're changing things up this year and having a separate, reverse-order draft for entire pitching staffs, so it will be interesting to see how that unfolds.
As you can imagine, with only 10 teams in the league, everyone has a "good" team on paper. This league rewards batters heavily with very negative points (only strikeouts), whereas pitchers get penalized for everything under the sun. I'll update you with scoring after we have our annual conference call later in March.
The keys to winning in the past have been Keepers and Sleepers.
So, I need your help! I'm setting up a poll in the sidebar of Discovering Dad, and I'm actually going to leave my fate partly in your hands.
I say "partly" because one of my players is SS Hanley Ramirez of the Florida Marlins, and with a #2 ESPN Ranking as of March 1st, he's a no-brainer to keep.
The top 2 players who receive your votes will fill out my Keeper picks for this year, and I REALLY want to win in this league so I'm hoping your collective wisdom will give me an edge!
Here's a summary of your choices:
1. Carlos Lee - OF Houston - 2007 stats - .303 Avg, 32 HR, 93 Runs, 119 RBI, 10 SB
2. Garrett Atkins - 3B Colorado - 2007 stats - .301 Avg, 25 HR, 83 Runs, 111 RBI, 3 SB
3. Derek Jeter - SS New York Yankees - 2007 stats - .322 Avg, 12 HR, 102 Runs, 73 RBI, 15 SB
4. Russell Martin - C Los Angeles Dodgers - 2007 stats - .293 Avg, 19 HR, 87 Runs, 87 RBI, 21 SB
5. Carlos Pena - 1B Tampa Bay - 2007 stats - .282 Avg, 46 HR, 99 Runs, 121 RBI, 1 SB
As you can see from this list, it's tough to pick only 2 of these fantasy studs to round out my Keepers, so that's why I need your help.
Here's some quick thoughts that come to my mind, and please feel free to share your with me as well.
Carlos Lee is either in his prime, or one year past it at 31-years-old. Either way, he's a hard slugger to pass up.
Garrett Atkins had a very slow start to last year, but he picked it up as the season went along. I might be able to get him in the second round of the draft though, depending on my slot in the order.
Derek Jeter is awesome, and I played both him and Hanley Ramirez consistently last year (one at Utility). He's 33-years-old with a slight dip in overall numbers last year too.
Russell Martin is one of the best hitting catchers in the league, and he is one of two (Victor Martinez being the other) catchers that can actually help you win by incrementally outpacing opponents at that position. I might be able to get him in the second or third round of the draft though.
Carlos Pena had a breakout year in 2007, but he plays for Tampa Bay. Let me say it again, he plays for Tampa Bay. He will definitely be out there in the first two rounds of the draft, and I would probably say he might not go until the fourth or fifth rounds in my league.
Not to make it more complicated, but here are a few other players on my roster from last year that I have the choice of keeping: Adam Dunn, Pat Burrell and Dan Uggla.
Let me know what you think. Your votes will determine my Keepers!

You have to keep Martin. There aren't many catchers that hit THAT well out there. It's not an easy position to fill. It's basically Martin, Martinez, Mauer, McCann (Dang, all Ms) and Rodriguez and that's it. And keep Atkins. Jeter is on the downside of his career; Pena stinks like a one-year wonder.
Thanks Dorky Dad! Did you vote on the poll? I appreciate the advice, and glad to see you here. I enjoy your blog as well.
